Barry H. Cohen, author of the science fiction trilogy, Soul Switchers began work on his series at the start of the first Trump administration. Part I of the three novels did not publish until 2022. However, Cohen claims he saw the early warning signs of coming repression right from the start.
The story line in Soul Switchers involves a young couple who stumble upon a vast conspiracy of people in high places that are stealing the souls of those they deem undeserving to live and transferring them into people clinging to life. The movement becomes corrupted and spins out of control. The couple travels back in time to learn how it all started and forward in time in an effort to stop it.
The author remarks that “While the soul switching and time travel provide entertainment value, the crux of the story revolves around ethical questions regarding who gets to decide who lives or dies—as well as the dangerous consequences of authoritarianism. Soul switching symbolizes the reality of political brainwashing. In fact, the entire saga is allegorical,” confesses Cohen.
Each of the three books ends with a cliff hanger. Part II is slated for release in 2026. New characters will appear. While he began writing it in 2023, the author hints that Part II will center around the rise of a resistance movement to fight the repressive regime created by the soul switchers. It reflects the current zeitgeist. Details of Part III will remain under wraps until well after the release of Part II according to Cohen.
